Open in new tab My Mom and Dad were able to afford a home in Clinton Hill. At the time, the neighborhood was a racially diverse and predominantly Black, mixed-income neighborhood. The brownstone was purchased in 1968, the first year of the Fair Housing Act, signed by President Lyndon Johnson. Ironically, 1968 was a banner year of milestones, including assassinations: Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on April 4th and Senator Robert F. Kennedy on June 6th, almost exactly two months later.
The accompanying photos are from 1969, the first year my family lived in the house.
